This development project creates conditions for production and delivery of renewable biogas for North Karelian traffic. 3-year project started 1.2.2010 and will last until the end of 2012. The project is managed by Joensuu Region Waste Management Ltd, a municipal company owned by five municipalities in Joensuu region. The main financier is the Regional Council of North Karelia (ERDF) and the co-financiers are JOSEK Ltd, Joensuu, Kitee and Kontiolahti municipalities, Biokymppi Ltd, Doranova Ltd and Jätekukko Ltd. One business plan is already written by the project. The production is planned to be started by upgrading landfill gas. Liquified biogas will be used by heavy traffic and compressed biogas by vans and passenger cars. More investments for biogas production are encouraged, especially in the countryside, so that farms can join the traffic biogas network. Information about traffic biogas is given to all ages. Climate change benefitsTraffic is the biggest greenhouse gas emissions producer in North Karelia. Biogas is an ideal fuel for traffic: it is 100 % renewable and it always replaces fossil fuels. Waste based traffic biogas can be produced from landfill gas, sewage water sludge, biowaste, manure and other organic waste. Biogas production from waste and its usage as a vehicle fuel is a very cost-effective way to reduce GHG emissions. Municipality benefitsTraffic biogas reduces oil dependency and GHG emissions. Decision to go for local renewable traffic fuel production and usage creates opportunities for new local businesses and improves local economy. Municipalities benefit by using biogas in their own vehicles because it is cheaper than fossil fuels. Traffic biogas is a real and affordable solution for rural transport also in the future when fossil fuel prices get higher and gasoline stations are far away. Project manager: Ari Lampinen
